Aitor González
holaitor@gmail.com

‘The visual world of Aitor González exists between memory and self-creation. Here plants morph into animals and into curvy typography in bold, striking colours, narrating fragile links between generations and the transformation of self in the new, unfamiliar terrain. González grew up in Valencia and moved to London in 2019 – his studio in east London always holds an ever-evolving set of paintings and drawings corresponding to a growing archive of his family’s social and cultural history he’s been working on since 2016.

González’s Quechua-Spanish descent is crucial to his practice, with deep familial and cultural ties to the Quechua people, an Indigenous nation of the Andes. His works draw from dreams, childhood memories, religious symbolism, family anecdotes, as well as his experiences of trying to understand his identity and the queer and creative becoming in the metropolitan city far removed from the gravitational points of his origins. His works are vivid and emotionally evocative, playful and vulnerable, tapping into rich visual and cultural iconography and most importantly, all contributing to the process of narration and reinterpretation, which flows like the river through generations past and future’ Anastasiia Fedorova
